The Secret Life of an Office Dog: Holiday Thoughts~ 6 min read

Hello again friends, I know it’s been a while, but it’s been a busy time in the family law community and my assistance was in high demand. And as you know, I’m a very good boy and going to help with whatever I can because I’ve got to support my mom, co-workers and clients. The holiday season is approaching, and I know it can be stressful for those who are already in the process of, or considering filing for, divorce in the New Year.

If you’ve got animal friends like me, or kids, it can be hard not to let your stress come out or be seen. We all know the holidays can be stressful. I know my mom can get frazzled with cooking, baking, decorating, and running around to stores and I don’t know why she won’t let me be involved with those things. I’ll happily taste test everything and supervise the decorating. I think my white fur on gingerbread houses makes them even more appealing and festive. I know it can be hard but try not to let your stress come out on your animal friends or kids. Let us be involved with things we can help with. I promise we want to be a big help even if we’re maybe not as helpful as we think.

Whether it’s cooking, baking, decorating, crafts, family traditions or just walking at night to see the lights, snow, and just enjoy the season, kids and your furry friends want to be involved and we’re trying to help manage your stress. It doesn’t have to be perfect. We don’t need expensive gifts. We just want to do things with you and make you feel better, though gifts, especially the delicious edible kind, are appreciated, or fun toys we can play with, especially when we can play with you and our kid friends. There are even festive treats for kids and for us K-9 companions. I don’t really know about the other animal groups, but I bet they have good treats too! I should make my mom take me shopping so I can find out. BTW, some of us really love pumpkin and apple treats that pop up during this time of year and we like to indulge too.

With all the good and fun which comes with the season, keep in mind that there are many things during the holidays that can be harmful to us too including chocolate treats (they smell so good though), onions, garlic and other toxic things that go into so many dishes, delicate and breakable ornaments or decorations that we can cut ourselves on if they break, hooks, lights if we’re chewers or crawlers for our kid friends and can get to the cords, tinsel, garland, strings, and things like even the melting salt on the sidewalks can hurt our paws. We can get sick from holly and mistletoe, and your kids can too. Also drinking Christmas tree water makes our tummies hurt (my mom says this is why we don’t have a real tree). I have a cat friend who ate the string he was chasing after the presents were unwrapped last Christmas and he had to have surgery! That wasn’t fun for anyone involved, so scary. We don’t want to make you spend your Christmas gift money on us, but we don’t always know what is and isn’t bad for us. We’re just trying to have fun too, that fun just sometimes lands us in places like the emergency vet adding to the holiday stress.

If any of you come to our office during the season please tell me hi and give me pets! I love making new friends and will be so excited to see you and share my excitement with you! I don’t really understand the holidays, but I’m told it’s the most wonderful time of the year, and there are lots of bells and twinkling lights, but I think every day is a great day and I’d be very happy to share it with each and every one of you! If you come in on the right day you might even get to see my other furry work friends. We have Milly who’s shy and skittish and unsure of people, but she has a good heart. She’s a cattle dog mix and wants me to love her but I’m still not sure about all that.

There’s Jabu who’s a boxer mix and bigger than me but he’s a sweet guy and we try to be friends but I’m going to tell you a secret, dogs that are larger than me scare me a little. There’s my tiny buddy Zeus who’s a teacup Pomeranian and still a puppy so he’s a little crazy but he means well. Next, we have Summer who’s a border collie and rottweiler mix, and she’s the sweetest and likes to check on everyone and spread her love. Finally, we have our newest friend who doesn’t come in often because she’s still a baby, Maple. She’s sweet and crazy and likes to try to play and I’m not usually that playful because I’m a professional boy, but she’s fun and breaks me out of my shell a bit. Maybe I’ll team up with one of them at some point and we can write a blog together!

From us working doggos to you and maybe even the nice cat who I only met once and he was kind of aloof, we wish you all a safe, fun, and happy holiday season! Hugs, barks and kisses and see you in 2025!
